eBay’s UK fee structure combines final value fees, payment processing and optional promoted listing charges. Small percentage differences can materially change net profit, especially on lower-priced items. This calculator allows you to model those variables before publishing a listing.

What This Tool Does Not Include

This calculator focuses on marketplace fees only.

It does not account for:

  • Item sourcing cost
  • Packaging cost
  • Returns or refunds
  • Overheads

For full margin modelling including sourcing, shipping and returns, see How I Make Money on eBay, Etsy and Vinted in the UK.

Why This Matters

Small percentage changes compound quickly.

If you are selling lower-value items, promotion and payment fees can remove most of the margin.

Use this tool to avoid listing at a false profit.

Understanding eBay Fees in the UK

eBay’s UK fee structure combines several percentage-based charges that compound quickly on lower-value items and promoted listings.

  • Final value fees are calculated on the total amount paid by the buyer, including postage.
  • Promoted listing fees, if used, are applied on top of that.
  • VAT is then applied to eligible fees.

I use this structure to test pricing before listing inventory, particularly in lower-margin categories.

How Much Does eBay Charge in the UK?

Final value fees vary by category, but standard private seller rates are typically applied as a percentage of the total sale amount. That total includes item price and postage charged to the buyer. If promoted listings are enabled, that percentage is added to the standard fee.

The exact rate depends on category and account type. Always confirm current fee tables against your account and category before assuming margin.

Does eBay Charge Fees on Postage?

Yes. Final value fees are generally calculated on the full amount paid by the buyer, including postage. If you charge £5 postage, fees are applied to that £5 as well.

This is one reason underpricing items and “recovering margin in shipping” rarely works long term.

Are Promoted Listing Fees Added on Top?

Yes. Promoted listing percentages are added to the final value fee. If you are paying 12.8% standard fees and 5% promoted listings, the combined percentage materially reduces net proceeds.

For a deeper breakdown of how promoted listings affect catalogue sellers, see Why eBay Promoted Listings Quietly Punish Catalogue Sellers.

Promotion can increase visibility, but it does not remove the need for structural margin. I explain when promotion makes commercial sense, and when it quietly erodes profit, in When I Allow eBay Promoted Listings and When I Refuse to Touch Them.

Is VAT Applied to eBay Fees?

VAT is applied to applicable eBay fees for UK sellers. The VAT rate affects the total deducted from your sale. If you are VAT registered, your treatment will differ from non-registered sellers.

The calculator above allows you to toggle VAT to see the impact clearly before listing.
