TL/DR: Key Highlights

I spent a long time writing this article to make sure that it was packed full of helpful content to get you started selling on eBay.co.uk

However, if you’re in a rush and don’t have the time right now, here’s my quick overview of what’s in my article

Why Choose eBay UK for Selling?

  • Free to Sell: No transaction fees for private sellers in most categories!
  • Easy Listing: eBay’s tools help you create compelling listings in minutes.
  • Global Marketplace: Reach millions of potential buyers worldwide.
  • Seller Protection: eBay offers support and security for your transactions.
  • Flexible Selling Options: Choose auctions, Buy It Now, and it even local pickup.

Let’s get to the full article

If you want to sell on eBay it’s best to sell on your own in-country platform, which in my case, because I live in England (in the UK) the eBay.co.uk site is the best option for me.

I’ll be focussing on the .co.uk site throughout this article but I suspect most other eBay Sites will have similar features and tools

Anyway, just because I sell on the .co.uk site it doesn’t mean that I can’t sell on the other eBay sites too.

There are a few ways to do it but the easiest is by using the Global Shipping program

So why sell on eBay anyway…I heard it’s past its prime and people don’t make money selling on eBay any more.

I’ve heard that too but every day, millions of buyers visit eBay, which means your items have the potential to reach more would be customers than on many other platforms

I still make sales most days of the week, although these days it’s very much ‘pay-to-play‘. I’ll explain this later, but just know if you don’t pay for their ads, you likely won’t get any visits to any of your listings

The Benefits of Selling on eBay UK

eBay UK is a well-known and reliable online marketplace with millions of buyers each day.

It has an old and clunky but easy to use interface and the selling tools that are provided does make it fairly easy for most people to use.

There are a few other benefits, some are more useful than others and I’ve written a few with hint of sarcasm

  • Global Reach: Use the Global Shipping Program to expand your audience.
  • Sales Management: Easily manage your sales with the Seller Hub.
  • eBay Shops: Set up an eBay shop to reach more customers and pay more fees.
  • Secure Transactions: Benefit from verification steps to ensure safe transactions.
  • Best Offers: There are a few ways to give away your profits, like the Best Offer option
  • Versatile Selling: Suitable for both private and business sellers, including those selling motors

Their secure payment system makes sure you get your money from sales fairly quickly and safely.

Although, when you first start out, they’ll likely keep hold of your money for several weeks under the guise of protecting buyers, even several weeks after the buyer has left positive feedback – I guess the interest in their bank account is too high to ignore

Understanding eBay UK’s Market Potential

eBay UK lets you connect with customers all over the world, not just in the UK.

This opens up a lot more opportunities for you to sell your items, whether you’re clearing out your room or running a side hustle.

The platform is perfect for everyone, from casual sellers to serious business owners and if you want to take it up a notch, you can create an eBay Shop.

This gives you a cool online storefront where you can showcase your products and build your brand. It helps you look more professional and makes it easier for customers to find and remember you.

Steve’s Top Tip
Keep an eye on the Shop subscription prices because eBay has started showing their pricing excluding VAT – which rarely happens in the UK. They do it on their fees too…and at 20% it can add up.

As a side thought I’m still trying to work out what is the Value this tax is adding – apart from more cash to the treasury – rip off Britain at it’s finest

eBay Seller Hub

eBay also has the Seller Hub, which is a handy tool that gives you insights into your sales performance.

You can track what’s selling well, see who’s interested in your items, and tweak your listings to try make more sales.

This means you can make smarter decisions about pricing and what to sell next and eBay also offers a bunch of resources to help you get started.

There are step-by-step guides that walk you through the listing process, and a help centre packed with answers to most of your questions.

And if you get stuck, you can talk to their AI chat bot, which ignores what you ask it and gives you stock answers that don’t help anyone, at which point, you repeatedly ask it to put you through to a human or you go bash your head against a wall

– I’ve been there more times than I can remember, maybe I bashed my head too hard!

With all this support, selling on eBay should be straightforward and user-friendly, allowing you to focus on what you enjoy—selling and making some extra cash!

Let’s see if it is that easy…

Preparing to Sell on eBay UK

Before you start listing your first item, it’s a good idea to get your ducks in a row to make sure you’re ready for a smooth selling experience.

Proper preparation can set you up for success on your eBay journey.

What You Need to Start Selling

To start selling on eBay UK, you’ll need:

An Active eBay Account: Sign up easily and for free if you don’t have one.

A Valid Bank Account: Necessary for receiving payments from your sales.

Items to Sell: Old clothes, electronics, or collectibles are all fair game, as long as they comply with eBay’s policies.

Once you have these in place, you’re ready to become an eBay UK seller…you Rockstar!

Setting Up Your eBay Seller Account

Creating your eBay seller account is straightforward:

  1. Visit the eBay UK website and click on “Register.”
  2. Choose between a personal or business account based on your selling intentions.
  3. Fill in the required details, including your name, address, and contact information.
  4. Link your bank account for receiving payments.
  5. Complete the verification process, which may involve confirming your phone number or email address.

Once verified, you’re ready to start listing!

Steve’s Top Tip
Start with a personal account to see if you like selling on eBay. Plus right now you get to do this for free. Personal accounts on ebay.co.uk currently don’t have any transaction charges, while Business Sellers are seemingly being shafted at every turn with too many fees and less visibility unless you pay for Ads (although that probably affects private sellers too)

Step-by-Step Guide to Listing Your First Item

Now, let’s get to the fun part—putting your first item on eBay UK!

Follow along to these easy steps to create a successful listing.

Step 1: Researching Your Item’s Value

This is important – Before setting your price, spend some time looking at similar items

Use the search bar to find listings similar to yours.

Check their condition, selling style (auction or Buy It Now), and their final selling prices.

Look at the items that have already sold and see how many active listing there are.

This information will help you work out what is know as sell through rate, which is probably the most important research you will need to do for each item you sell

This will help you find a competitive price range and understand how often the item sells and at what price

Which also means whether it’s worth your time to try and sell the item

Step 2: Crafting a Compelling Listing

A good eBay listing goes beyond just a title and price.

To attract buyers to your items, consider these tips:

  • High-Quality Photos: Take clear, bright images that showcase your item from different angles.
  • Descriptions: Don’t waste too much time here.
  • Keywords: Include relevant search terms in your title and description to help buyers find your listing. The first four words are the most important
  • Selling Format: Decide whether you want a fixed price with “Buy It Now” or to create excitement with an auction, which may actually sell for £0.99 because you didn’t pay for ads and didn’t get any views

Steve’s Top Tip
I used to write my own HTML listing templates to make my listings look pretty. These days eBay uses an AI tool to write descriptions, which in my experience, are usually poor quality, which tells me that descriptions are not as important as they used to be. Don’t waste too much time here, write the basics and move on!

Pricing Strategies for eBay UK Sellers

Setting the right price is crucial for getting sales and hopefully profits.

Think about your sales goals and target audience when setting your prices.

Don’t forget to account for selling costs, such as eBay fees and shipping.

Competitive Pricing Techniques

To stay competitive think about

  • Research: Continuously monitor the prices of similar items
  • Slight Undercutting: Don’t be tempted to offer a price slightly lower than similar listings to attract ‘bargain hunters’ as this tactic is a race to the bottom and doesn’t help anyone
  • Factor in eBay Fees: Include transaction fees and other costs when setting your price to ensure profitability. This is easy with a personal Account as there currently aren’t any fees.

Utilizing Auctions vs. Buy It Now Options

eBay offers two main selling formats:

  • Auctions: Great for rare or unique items that may generate bidding excitement.
  • Buy It Now: Ideal for items with a set value, providing a quick and easy buying option.

Your choice depends on the type of item you’re selling and how quickly you want to make a sale. Auctions can lead to competitive bidding, while Buy It Now allows for immediate sales.

In both instances your success will be tied directly to the item you are selling and how much money you are prepared to pay to eBay

Setting Up Payment Methods

eBay simplifies payment setup. Just connect your bank account during account setup, and payouts will go directly into it.

You can change payment details in the “Payments” tab on your Seller Hub.

Buyers will have various payment options at checkout.

Best Practices for Posting Your Items

When it comes to posting your items, following some best practices can make a big difference in your selling experience. Here are some key tips to help you post your items like a pro:

Use eBay’s Discounted Shipping Labels

Take advantage of eBay’s discounted shipping labels to save money on postage.

This feature allows you to print labels directly from the platform, sometimes at a lower cost than you’d find at the post office and you get the added beenfit of some postal protections if the item gets lost in transit.

I usually get £20 protection for my lower priced items that I post by Royal Mail letter, usually 2nd class post

Plus, it helps streamline the process—just print, attach, and you’re ready to go!

Be Clear About Shipping Methods and Costs

Transparency is key when it comes to shipping.

Make sure to clearly explain your shipping methods and costs in your listing. Specify whether you’re using standard shipping, express options, or any other methods.

This helps set buyer expectations and can reduce questions or misunderstandings down the line.

Provide Tracking Details

If you’re shipping items, especially internationally through the Global Shipping Programme, consider providing tracking details.

This not only keeps your buyers informed about where their package is, but it also adds an extra layer of trust.

Buyers appreciate knowing when to expect their items, and tracking can help resolve any delivery issues more quickly.

Seller Hub Tools

The Seller Hub is packed with useful tools that can enhance your shipping practices. It offers insights into postage costs, delivery times, and even helps you create postage policies for different types of items.

By using these tools, you can make informed decisions about how to post your items efficiently, helping you save time and money.

Package Items Carefully

Always take the time to package your items securely to prevent damage during transit. Use bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or sturdy boxes, and be sure to seal everything well.

A well-packaged item not only arrives safely but also reflects your professionalism as a seller.

Consider Postal Timeframes

Be aware of the postal timeframes when you list your items. If you’re using Royal Mail, most buyers already know how long it takes.

If you can post items quickly, highlight that in your listing to attract more buyers who need their items fast.

Try To Make Your Listing Stands Out

Create attractive listings with high-quality images and clear, detailed descriptions.

Set fair prices or use the Best Offer option to engage with buyers. Consider paying for an eBay Shop for a more professional appearance, particularly if selling unique items.

What To Do If Your Item Doesn’t Sell

If your item doesn’t sell, don’t worry!

You can relist it and try again.

Go through the research phase again and review similar items and adjust your price or listing details if necessary.

Consider starting with a lower bid or a more appealing Best Offer range to catch buyers’ attention. Persistence is key!

How eBay UK Protects its Sellers

eBay provides various seller protection policies to ensure a safe selling experience.

They have policies in place to help resolve issues with buyers and address payment security concerns.

The Seller Hub offers tools and support for all sellers, hopefully giving a fair experience while outlining rules and managing transaction fees for added security.

Historically buyers get the protection and Sellers…not so much!

Selling on eBay UK can be a decent side hustle if you use the right strategies.

Try and understand your market and price your items competitively, and create appealing listings.

Experiment with different selling methods and maintain good payment and shipping practices.

Make your listings pop to attract attention, and remember that eBay UK offers seller protection to keep your transactions secure.

As a web Designer I never thought I would use the phrase make Your Listings Pop – I’m going to go and lie down

Good luck selling on eBay, I wish you all the best

At the time of writing this I am still actively running a featured shop and I make sales nearly everyday.

It’s a lot harder than it used to be and I make far less money than I did.

But at the moment it’s still worth doing…just!

On the brightside, eBay seems to be doing very nicely for itself at the moment.

I’m sure they’ve had a directive from the board to maximize every penny before their bubble bursts – and fair play to them they are wringing every penny out of Business Sellers.
