What is Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is an online business model that allows you to earn money by promoting other people’s products or services.
It’s a great way to make passive income and can be very lucrative if done correctly.
It can sometimes become complicated, often unnecessarily, but in simple terms there are four steps to being an affiliate marketer
- Affiliate Puts The Product Ad On Their Website, usually a link or image
- The Customer Clicks The Link And Converts The Sale
- Sale Conversions Are Tracked
- The Affiliate Gets An Affiliate Commission
Here’s a great example of what an Affiliate Link might look like.

Anyway, back to the guide.
In this guide, we will look at an introduction to affiliate marketing and outline some tips on how to get started.
We will also discuss some strategies for maximising your earnings potential, and equally as important, we will look at some of the common pitfalls that affiliate marketers should avoid.
How to Get Started with Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is an attractive way to make money online.
It’s a great opportunity for those who want to work from home, set their own hours, and earn passive income.
With the right approach and strategies in place, it can be very lucrative as well.
Finding affiliate programs is an important step in getting started
There are a number of ways to locate these programs, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The most popular way to find affiliate programs is to do a simple Google Search
You can simply enter keywords related to the topic you are interested in promoting, and the search results will return a list of relevant programs.
for example ‘golf coaching affiliate program’
One of the best ways to find reliable affiliate programs is by visiting affiliate networks.
Affiliate networks are companies that manage a variety of different programs and offer them in one convenient location.
They often have detailed information about each program, including payout details and requirements.
This makes it easier to compare different programs side-by-side and determine which ones are right for you.
Tips for Choosing the Right Products and Services to Promote
Here some some tips for Choosing the Right Products and Services to Promote as an affiliate marketer
1. Research the product or service thoroughly before promoting it.
Look for reviews from other customers, research the company behind the product or service, and get an understanding of what value it provides to potential customers.
2. Make sure that you are familiar with the product or service so that you can properly explain its features and benefits to potential customers.
A lot of companies will have a Demo or a trial so you can check things out and get a feel for how they work.
3. Promote products or services that you actually use and believe in.
This is a core principle in my own affiliate marketing
This will make it easier for you to create compelling content, as you are more likely to be knowledgeable about the product or service.
4. Consider the company’s commission structure before signing up for an affiliate program.
Some programs have higher commission rates than others, so choosing one that pays you a competitive rate can make a big difference in your earnings potential.
5. Look for products or services that have good customer support as this will make it easier to address any customer issues or concerns.
The same applies to the customer feedback scores.

Strategies for Maximising Earnings Potential with Affiliate Marketing
It is important to have a plan in place if you want to maximise your earning potential.
First, focus on building relationships with your readers and other affiliates.
Building trust with your readers is key to creating successful relationships and increasing your earnings potential.
Second, take advantage of social media platforms to promote your affiliate products or services.
Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are great tools for connecting with potential customers and driving traffic to your website.
Third, diversify the types of products or services you promote and the companies you work with. This can help mitigate risk and ensure that your income is not reliant on one particular program or company.
Fourth, create an email list of subscribers to send regular updates about new products and offers.
This can be a great way to drive sales as well as build relationships with your readers over time.
Tracking Your Results and Optimising Your Campaigns
You put a lot of time and effort in, so it makes sense to do the stuff that works and less of the stuff that doesn’t.
But if you don’t track the performance how will you know.
If you don’t have the money for expensive affiliate tracking, then using a simple spreadsheet will be enough in the early days.
Tracking your results and optimising your campaigns is important
This involves monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) such as clicks, conversions, cost per acquisition (CPA), and return on investment (ROI).
By tracking these KPIs, you will be able to measure the success or failure.
Here are some tips to help track your results and optimise your campaigns:
Setting measurable goals is key for getting the most out your campaign.
Goals should be
specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and Time Bound
For example, a goal might be to increase click-through rate from 1% to 2%, by the end of the quarter.
You might ask how you would do this?
If I wanted to increase the click through rate of my affiliate offer, I may think about a few of these things:
- Review my Article or Post and see if it’s relevant to the users search intent
- Look at whether I can add a bonus offer to help entice someone to use my link
- Look at how I have presented the link. Does it have a clear call to action?
- Are there too many other links on the page causing distraction or looking spammy?
These are just a few ideas but are things that you should be monitored on an ongoing basis.
Your ROI should be greater than 1x in order for you to make a profit
By setting these measurable goals it will become easier to track progress and success as well as identify areas where improvements need to be made.
Common Pitfalls Affiliate Marketers Should Avoid
Not having a plan in place is a huge mistake
As we previously discussed a plan should include specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound goals.
Without a plan, it is difficult to track progress and successes, as well as identify areas where improvements need to be made.
But many affiliates fail to do this.
Failing to regularly track your performance metrics will be detrimental as you will just waste time on things that don’t work
Finally, failing to diversify the types of products or services you promote and the companies you work with can put you at risk of relying too heavily on one particular program or company.
As a couple of examples:
I built an Affiliate Website promoting the WordPress Membership Plugin WishList Member.
It took me a whole weekend to build the site…
and WishList Member was sold on the same day I launched the Website. I’m yet to see the implications of this and waiting for the re-brand.
Another example, for an Affiliate Website I built,
This time for Content Samurai AI Video Creation Software.
In this case, two different things, out of my control, impacted the website.
The first was a re-branding from Content Samurai to Vidnami and the second was acquisition.
The Content Samurai Review website was starting to make decent commissions each month, but I was busy with other things so I decided to sell the website on Flippa – you can probably still see the Flippa listing
The website was sold, and unfortuantely for the new owner, a few months later, Content Samurai sold their Business To GoDaddy, who promptly took the product off the market.
Luckily for me I had other revenue streams, but it shows how important it is to spread your affiliate reach across multiple programs and companies in order to reduce risk and ensure your income is not reliant on just one program or company.
Final Thoughts on Making Money With Affiliate Marketing
At the end of the day, making money with affiliate marketing requires careful planning and dedication.
But remember not to over complicate things, remember the four steps?
It is important to create a plan that includes measurable goals in order to track progress and success as well as identify areas where improvements need to be made.
Additionally, it is important to regularly monitor performance metrics such as clicks, conversions, cost per acquisition (CPA), and return on investment (ROI).
Finally, diversifying products or services promoted across multiple companies will not only reduce risk but also increase earning potentials.
With these tips in mind, anyone can get started with affiliate marketing and start seeing results in no time!
